Joel McHale and President Obama certainly brought the laughs this weekend during the White House Correspondents Association Dinner, affectionately nicknamed “Nerd Prom.”
Our very own Carson suited up in his finest tuxedo and attended the A-list event with his fellow TODAY show co-anchors Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, and Natalie Morales.
It was his first time attending the nerd prom and he couldn’t wait to share all the behind-the-scenes details this morning on AMP Radio.
“Now that I’m on the TODAY show, somebody somewhere considers me a newsman, which is frightening!” he told Producer Angie. “But really, it was great because I got to spend time with the gang on the TODAY show, who I like so much…To me, that was really the highlight.”
“It’s a huge cluster-eff, if you can imagine.” Carson said of the event. “It’s at the Washington Hilton, there’s 3,000 people. It’s the world’s longest wedding. You know, it’s huge!”
A wedding, minus the clutch open bar! Carson explained that there wasn’t much booze or bread to go around.
“There’s wine at your table. We were fighting for the bread. There was only one thing of bread and Al [Roker] had a couple of bread rolls and I stole half of one of his when he wasn’t looking. He was hoarding all the bread and people would walk by and he’d say, ‘Yes! I’m eating carbs!’”
Along with his TODAY show co-horts, Carson also sat with Pennsylvania Senator Robert Casey, some Comcast executives, and comedian Kevin Hart.
“And Kevin, I kept telling him, ‘This is you next year. You’re going to do this.”
Carson had rave reviews for this year’s emcee, E!’s Joel McHale. Some said he was too hard on New Jersey governor Chris Christie, but overall Carson felt McHale’s roast was “fair and balanced,” as Fox News would say.
“I thought he was right down the middle. No one was safe in the room. I thought he was equally hard on the Republicans as he was on the Democrats. He killed the media in general.”
President Obama gave McHale a run for his money with some great jokes and killer comedic timing. And the best joke of night? Carson said Obama’s bit about Speaker of the House John Boehner’s spray tan killed in the room.
“These days, the House Republicans actually give John Boehner a harder time than they give me,” Obama told the crowd. “Which means orange really is the new black.”
