The United States men’s national soccer team may not have survived the brutal World Cup knockout round, but our entire nation is still captivated by goalkeeper Tim Howard’s incredible performance.
Howard made a mind-blowing 16 saves during Belgium’s 2-1 victory, which is the most in World Cup history since 1966.
President Obama was pretty impressed as well. He called up Howard and fellow teammate Clint Dempsey to congratulate them both on a job well done.
“I just wanted to call to say you guys did us proud,” the president said. “You guys did great, and as somebody whose first sport was soccer, although I was never that good, to see the way you guys captured the hearts and the imaginations of the whole country is unbelievable.”
Howard is one popular man these days. He also received a call from Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.
The Wikipedia entry for the Secretary of Defense was briefly and hilariously changed to Tim Howard’s name following his dominant performance against Belgium.
From 1 SecDef to another: Hagel calls @timhowardgk to say thanks for defending USA. We (USA) are proud of @ussoccer! http://t.co/M8nsYdlXFn—
